News Photo by Steve Schulwitz Roger Barc, also known as the Fish Doctor, shows off a lake trout that was caught and weighed during the closing day of the Michigan Brown Trout Festival in Alpena Sunday. The tournament opened and closed with thunderstorms, but had some good fishing throughout.

The Michigan Brown Trout Festival announced the winners of the fishing tournaments Sunday near the small tent and handed out the prizes.

Results for the super tournament Sunday won’t be finalized until today, because tournament officials want to review the weights and totals.

The tournament began with thunderstorms on July 18 and wrapped up Sunday with heavy rain and wind.

In between however there were plenty of nice fish weighed in.

Ryan Wieczorkowski netted the largest brown trout of the week, which weighed 8.15 pounds. David Rensberry finished second in the category with a brown that was 6.8 pounds, while Arden Rensberry had a brown trout that weighed 6.15 pounds, which was good for third-place.

As is the norm, most of the largest fish of the tournament were lake trout and there were many large lakers brought to the scales.

The first place winner in the lake trout division was Kevin Lundquist who landed a 23.85 pound laker. Carl Hatala finished second with a 20.50 pound fish and William Smigelski placed third with a 16.7 pound laker.

In the steelhead category only a few ounces separated first place from two anglers who were tied for second.

Derek Soltysiak’s 11.45 pound steelhead earned him the top spot on the leaderboard, while John Campbell and Dan Bouchard each had a steelhead that weighed 11.10 to share a portion of second place.

The largest salmon of the tournament was reeled in by Scott Speaks and weighed 23.2 pounds, while Cody Braun was a distant second with a salmon that was 16.85 pounds. Brett Gillbertson ended in third with a salmon that tipped the scale at 16.65 pounds.

Walleye is one of the most populated fish in Thunder Bay and there were several large ones that led the field during the tournament.

Shawn Muszynski finished first with a 7.9 pound walleye and Leeann Grulke was second with one that came in at 7.6 pounds. Larry Donajkowski’s 7.4 walleye was good enough for third-place.

In the Atlantic salmon bracket, Shawn Muszynski was first with a 12.55 pound Atlantic and Justin Sharp second with a 12.50 pounder. Austin Szatkowski was third with a 11.10 fish.

Festival President Peggy Donakowski said the event had its ups and downs, especially with the changes in weather, but overall things went smoothly. She said running just the tournament, and not having to run the big tent was much simpler. Donakowski said the most asked question she received during the festival this year is if the festival will return to its normal size in 2021.

This year’s event was greatly scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Things went pretty well and the number of boats we have across all events was pretty close to last year,” Donakowski said. “Will we be back next year full force? We’ll try. We’ll see what happens. It sure was nice just to run fishing and it was a lot easier to run.”
