MINNEAPOLIS – Gopher Hockey head coach Bob Motzko has announced the additions of Mason Nevers and Carl Fish to Minnesota's incoming freshman class for the 2020-21 season.

"We are thrilled to bolster our lineup for this season with two experienced skaters in Mason Nevers and Carl Fish – two Minnesota kids who are ecstatic to be playing hockey at the University of Minnesota," Motzko said. "Both players had tremendous high school careers and have continued to develop in junior hockey. We are excited about bringing in two more promising young men, and we think fans are going to like the impact they have on our program as well."

Nevers and Fish will join Brock Faber (a defenseman from Maple Grove, Minn.) and Mike Koster (a defenseman from Chaska, Minn.) as freshmen for the 2020-21 season. Faber and Koster were previously announced as signed Gopher Hockey prospects in November 2019.

The forward served as an alternate captain and shared the team's rookie of the year honors. Nevers previously spent three seasons at Edina High School and capped his prep career by captaining the Hornets to the 2019 MSHSL Class AA State Championship. In 89 career high school games, Nevers notched 146 points (55 goals, 91 assists) while being selected as a Star Tribune Boys' Hockey All-Metro First Team honoree and a finalist for the Mr. Hockey award as a senior in 2019. He played with fellow Gophers Sammy Walker and Ben Brinkman as a prep.

Carl Fish

A native of St. Paul, Minn., Fish joins the Maroon & Gold after spending two seasons in the NAHL with the Bismarck Bobcats where the defenseman played in 94 regular-season games with 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) along with three playoff contests. Fish led all Bismarck defensemen with 24 points (five goals, 19 assists in a truncated 39-game schedule during the 2019-20 season. Prior to his tenure in the NAHL, the incoming freshman skated for four years at St. Paul Johnson High School while tallying 59 points (19 goals, 40 assists) in 101 career games. A two-year captain for the Governors, Fish was the 2018 Pioneer Press East Metro Boy's Hockey Player of the Year, a 2018 Star Tribune Boys' Hockey All-Metro Third Team honoree and a finalist for the 2018 Reed Larson Award.
