Total loss of fish populations expected in some Colorado ponds - OutThere Colorado

Colorado is losing fish as lakes, ponds, and reservoirs dry up across parts of the state amid drought conditions.

Some fisheries are about to be on empty, giving anglers unlimited catch opportunities before it's too late.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) issued an emergency public fish salvage at Jumbo (Julesburg) Reservoir on Monday, August 25 due to severe drought conditions dropping water levels. The dramatic decline is likely to result in a loss of the entire fishery.

Water levels are expected to be below the boat ramp within just a few days, which will eliminate access to trailer-launched boats

“It is very unfortunate to lose such an incredible and popular fishery,” local fisheries biologist Mandi Brandt said. “The fishery plays an important role in the local economy. Jumbo anglers really enjoy fishing for walleye and crappie in particular.”

Jumbo Reservoir is a 1,578-acre water located on the Jumbo State Wildlife Area. Here's a look at where it's located on the map.

CPW also announced an emergency public fish salvage at Poudre Ponds in Greeley beginning on Wednesday, August 26 due to impending repair work resulting in the draining of the ponds as well as the potential loss of all fish.

Officials say the city of Greeley needs to drain the ponds to allow for emergency repairs to the intake pump.

Poudre Ponds is located near the intersection of W. O Street and N. 35th Avenue northwest of Greeley. Stocked with loads of trout, it's a popular fishing spot among residents in the area. Largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie, common carp, and gizzard shad are also up for catch.

“Once we get water back in the pond we are going to work to rebuild the fishery immediately,” said District Wildlife Manager Brandon Muller in a press release.

Anglers musts have a valid Colorado fishing license. Fishing will only be permitted during daylight hours, with size, bag, and possession limits suspended until the emergency public salvage is terminated. This end date will be announced by CPW in conjunction with the city of Greeley.
