The 2020 Fall Salmon Run: ‘A steady trickle’ of fish on some Lake Ontario tributaries - newyorkupstate.com

The fall salmon run on Lake Ontario tributaries is beginning with various stages of intensity, according to bait shops and fishing guides on waterways along the lake’s south shore.

Today begins a weekly report of the run’s status by NYup.com that will continue through Columbus Day weekend.

Here’s what we’re hearing at this point.

Salmon River

The river has been experiencing some low water flows recently. That coupled with the warm weather hasn’t been a good combination. However, while there hasn’t been any huge runs yet, places like the Douglaston Salmon Run at the river’s mouth has experience several noteworthy runs and some fish have been caught in the lower river, downtown and the ball park area.

Shane Muckey, of Altmar Oufitters, said anglers he has spoken with at his cleaning station say the bite is best from sunrise to about 9 a.m. each day and then just dies off. Once the sun is up and the temperatures rise, the fish settle into the deep pools and are hard to catch, he said.

Of the fish he’s cleaned lately, Muckey said there appears to be an appreciable amount (for this time of year) of brown trout in the river. He also cleaned a coho and steelhead at his fish cleaning station.

Rob and Mike Allport, co-owners at Fat Nancy’s, agreed there has been no huge runs yet, but that “a good number of fish” have been caught in places like the ball park.

"People keep calling and asking if it’s worth the long drive up here, " said Mike Allport. “There are a good number of fish (already in the river). If you get in the right spot, you’ll hook up. The lower end of the river is the better part to fish at this point.”

Rick Smith, at Pineville Sporting Supply, agreed that fish are being caught, but that the river “is not on fire yet.”

And like others interviewed, he noted “we need some rain and cooler temperatures.”

From a score of 1-10, we’ll rate the Salmon River at a little more than 3 at this point.

Oswego River

Hunter Wojslaw, who runs two cleaning stations on the river, said there has been no substantial runs yet.

“I’d call it a steady trickle,” he said. "There’s been a good number of fish considering the water level. "

One thing he has notice is that “quite a few brown trout have been brought to hand” recently. And that’s extremely early for them."

“There were also two steelhead caught up at the dam.”

Based on Wojslaw’s comments, we’ll rate the Oswego River a 2 at this point.

Genesee River, Oak Orchard River, Ninemile Creek

No reports yet from these three waterways of any runs. However, anglers are beginning to catch salmon off the Olcott Pier on Lake Ontario and that means fish will soon be running up Ninemile. There’s not enough info to rate any these waterways yet.

Lower Niagara River

The first salmon of the year were caught this week off the NYPA Fishing Platform in the lower Niagara River this past week, according to Lisa Drabczyk of Creek Road Bait and Tackle.

Some salmon have also been caught from shore further up in the gorge, as well. It is still early in the run, Drabczyk said.

“Anglers are catching fish, It may be only 1-2 (per outing), but they (the salmon) are starting to run a bit,” she said.

Based on Drabczyk’s comments, we’ll rate the Lower Niagara River a 3 at this point.
