PLYMOUTH – World Fish Migration Day was supposed to make a splash here in May after the town was selected as the North American hub for the global event. Instead, the COVID-19 pandemic dampened the celebration by causing most activities to be canceled.
Thanks to the internet, Plymouth has a second chance to participate in World Fish Migration Day. Local officials are sponsoring the Rivers Full of Fish webinar to coincide with the postponed program on Thursday, Oct. 22.
Two online webinars are scheduled for that day. The first begins at 1 p.m. and will focus on "Science and Technology." The second at 5 p.m. will center on "A Celebration of River Restoration: Past, Present and Future." Both are free but registration is required.
"We’re planning day and evening programs," said David Gould, director of Marine and Environmental Affairs in Plymouth. "We’re excited because more than 400 people signed up to participate in just the first few days after we announced it."
The two webinars will include environmental and wildlife experts discussing various topics related to migratory fish. Locally, Gould will be one of the speakers, as will Darius Coombs, director of Wampanoag Interpretation and Research at Plimoth Plantation.
In addition, Abby Archer of Barnstable County and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension will talk about her fish tagging program. The fisheries and aquaculture specialist leads efforts in the spring to electronically tag river herring on Town Brook in Plymouth.
Other speakers include Joshua Royte, senior conservation scientist at The Nature Conservancy, John Waldman, professor at Queens College, Bob Irvin, president of American Rivers, CarrieSelberg Robinson, director for Office of Habitat Conservation at NOAA Fisheries, George Pess, watershed program manager at NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Lynn Scarlett, chief external affairs officer at The Nature Conservancy, Julie Turini, director of Lands, Rivers and Communities at Resources Legacy Fund, and KeithEllenbogen, professional underwater wildlife photographer.
Also taking part in the webinar will be Herman Wanningen, founder of World Fish Migration Day and the World Fish Migration Foundation in the Netherlands.
"Everyone is welcome to join in on Rivers Full of Fish webinar," Gould said, "We are celebrating our love of fish and rivers."
