Columbus Day weekend is typically the busiest weekend of the fall season for Fish and Game. On Saturday, officials responded to two injured hikers and six calls for hikers in trouble. One of the injured calls was for a 33-year-old man from Atlanta. Officials said the man fell 20 feet while climbing up at Cathedral Ledge State Park in Conway. He received multiple injuries to his back, hip and foot. Another injured hiker was rescued on Sunday around 2:45 p.m. when a woman fell and was injured on the Welch and Dickey Trail in Thornton. “One of our busier rescue weekends of the year — a lot of hikers,” Lt. James Kneeland of Fish and Game said. “I’ve never seen the Franconia Notch area where I cover as busy as it was this particular weekend. Travel in a vehicle was very difficult to get through the Notch. The parking lots were full. I think anywhere they could stick a vehicle, they were.”Although it may be sunny and warm at the base of a mountain or trail, that may not be the case at the top. Kneeland said some areas have already seen snow and ice. He stressed that hikers should be dressed for the elements.
