For much of 2020, COVID-19 brought baseball to a halt for players within the Marlins organization. Some of them are now making up for that lost time. Just like in previous years, Fish Stripes will be consistently updating the whereabouts of your favorite Fish during the offseason. At FishStripes.com/offseason, you can find weekly news, stats, highlights and (small sample size) analysis.
LIDOM (Dominican Republic)
Final 2020-21 season stats
- Lewin Díaz (Estrellas Orientales)—.217/.309/.361, 3 HR, 16 K, 109 wRC+ in 94 PA
- Jesús Sánchez (Toros del Este)—.278/.297/.472, 1 HR, 10 K, 118 wRC+ in 37 PA
- Joe Dunand (Leones del Escogido)—.319/.398/.542, 3 HR, 25 K, 185 wRC+ in 83 PA
- Jorge Guzman (Gigantes del Cibao)—18.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP in 1.0 IP
It was not a completely smooth ride, but LIDOM made it through a 30-game regular season.
Dunand led the league in slugging percentage and finished top 10 in almost every significant offensive category! Missing time down the stretch likely removed him from serious MVP award consideration.
Lewin’s tough luck on balls in play began to even out during the final week, but not entirely. He ended up with a .222 BABIP, identical to what he posted this summer in the majors, whereas Dunand was on the opposite end of the spectrum (.444 BABIP). The young slugger was far more effective at home (.780 OPS) than on the road (.542 OPS). True to the eye test and scouting reports, he graded out as a plus defender at first base.
Beginning Sunday (Dec. 27), the Estrellas and the Leones will face off in a best-of-three play-in series with the winner qualifying for the postseason as the No. 4 seed. Hopefully, the Marlins permit Dunand and Díaz to continue competing. Sánchez’s club already announced that his winter ball season is over—as mentioned on Fish Stripes previously, his playing time had been limited by a crowded outfield situation.

LPB (Colombia)
2020-21 season stats
- Harold Ramirez (Caimanes de Barranquilla)—.338/.430/.412, 15 K in 79 PA
Harold’s on-base percentage leads his team and puts him in the top five among all qualified hitters in the league.
He has been comfortable with a variety of defensive assignments: 5 GS at LF, 1 GS at CF, 4 GS at RF, 2 GS at 1B, 6 GS at DH 6.
The LPB regular season concludes next Monday (Dec. 28).
LVBP (Venezuela)
2020-21 season stats
- José Salas (Águilas del Zulia)—.188/.278/.219, 14 K in 36 PA
I’ll emphasize it every week: Salas is 10 years younger than the average LVBP player!
Zulia will be getting very busy after Christmas, aiming to play several doubleheaders to make up games that were recently postponed due to COVID-19.
LBPRC (Puerto Rico)
2020-21 season stats
1st official pro win for LHP Antonio Velez (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) pitching for Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayagüez!

Maldonado’s consistency as a reliever while facing mostly older competition is encouraging. Even though Low-A Jupiter is his probable MiLB assignment for 2021, making the leap to High-A Beloit wouldn’t be a total shock.
Navarreto got off to a scalding start with the bat, but didn’t play at all last week. Not sure what that’s about.
Off the Field
- Lewis Brinson has a passion for fashion and some good connections, apparently. He flew up to New York City for a photoshoot.
- Víctor Mesa Jr. went to Stamp Tattoos for his latest ink session and brought a camera along for the ride.
