For much of 2020, COVID-19 brought baseball to a halt for players within the Marlins organization. Some of them are now making up for that lost time. Just like in previous years, Fish Stripes will be consistently updating the whereabouts of your favorite Fish during the offseason. At FishStripes.com/offseason, you can find weekly news, stats, highlights and (small sample size) analysis.
LIDOM (Dominican Republic)
It took a full seven games to determine a champion in the Dominican Republic. Águilas Cibaeñas ultimately prevailed over Gigantes del Cibao. Old friend Jonathan Villar didn’t contribute much for them throughout the postseason—hitting 7-for-45 (.156 BA) with only one stolen base—but he had two runs batted in during the clincher. With spring training full squad workouts a month away, Villar is still available in MLB free agency.
LPB (Colombia)
2020-21 regular season/postseason combined stats
- Harold Ramirez (Caimanes de Barranquilla)—.362/.432/.504, 1 HR, 19 K in 146 PA
- Sandy León (Caimanes de Barranquilla)—.205/.319/.359, 1 HR, 7 K in 48 PA
Ramirez has taken his performance to another level recently. He’s currently riding a nine-game hitting streak, prioritizing putting the ball in play. Regular season and postseason combined, the 26-year-old now has a significant lead among all qualified LPB batters in the following categories: batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits, doubles and total bases. He’s tied for first in runs scored and second in runs batted in. Defensively, he has found a steady home in right field.
Speaking of defense, opponents have attempted 14 stolen bases with León behind the plate. Only five made it safely (64.3 CS%). However, 18 of 20 were successful against him in LIDOM earlier this winter. Combining those figures—32.4 CS%—should be more representative of his actual skill level.
It’s been a closely played league championship series, with Caimanes de Barranquilla scoring 11 runs while allowing 12. But after dropping Game 4 on Wednesday, they’re trailing 3-1 overall and on the brink of elimination.
These games are streamed live and in HD on YouTube (en español).
LBPRC (Puerto Rico)
2020-21 postseason stats
- Isan Díaz (Criollos de Caguas)—.167/.412/.250, 4 K in 16 PA
- Anthony Maldonado (Criollos de Caguas)—4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 4 K in 2.0 IP
- Antonio Velez (Indios de Mayagüez)—0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP, 1 K in 1.0 IP
Sidelined during the previous round, Brian Navarreto (Indios de Mayagüez) has been activated for the finals.
Meanwhile, Díaz’s winter ball stint is over after only four games. His team announced Tuesday morning that the infielder had already departed the island rather than ride out the long COVID-19 related stoppage in play.
