Spring fish fry fundraisers at Aspinwall’s Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy won’t resemble years past, but organizers said the Lenten events will forge on.
The school along Brilliant Avenue will host two take-outs, Feb. 26 and March 6. Hungry diners can pick up meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Previously, the fundraisers were less about the fish and more about the community gathering, but this year will focus solely on the food.
“We’ll have online ordering so there won’t be any standing in line,” parent volunteer Michele DiGiacomo said. “Though we can’t gather, we hope people will support our mission and help us with all that we provide for the school.”
The Allegheny County Health Department ordered fish fry sponsors to have a health permit and follow the state’s covid-19 mitigation guidelines.
Fish fries associated with the Diocese of Pittsburgh will be takeout-only.
In a year with covid-19 restrictions bearing down, DiGiacomo said volunteers will be screened and the menu will be limited. Gone are the fish tacos and fried shrimp, but a pared-down menu still offers options that should please most.
Cod entrees will cost $7 and sandwiches will be $10.
Katie Lovett, school director of marketing, said patrons will have to wait outside the 3rd Street entrance for curbside delivery.
“The biggest change is that people aren’t allowed in the building,” Lovett said. “The fish fry last year was our last fundraiser with in-person gatherings. It was our most successful and had people lined up the stairs and down the main hallway of the school.”
Volunteers were able to get only the first of their scheduled fish fries in just before covid-19 started shutting everything down in spring 2020.
At that event, more than 500 pounds of fish filled the cafeteria fryers and customers gobbled up sides that included shrimp, coleslaw and soup.
They sold more than 200 pounds of French fries and 20 pounds of coleslaw.
Sides this year will include pierogies, haluski by the pint, mac and cheese, veggies, applesauce, fries and slaw.
Organizers decided to move ahead with the reconfigured event because it is a significant money-maker for the Parent Teacher Guild.
In its third decade, proceeds in recent years have topped $5,000.
Money helps pay for student programs and special educational material, new equipment and grants used by students for community service.
“Our fundraising has been so curtailed by not being able to have any community-based events,” DiGiacomo said.
Tickets for a 50/50 raffle will be sold during the fish fries.
Phone orders will be taken at lunch only at 412-781-7927.
