Lent is here and that means Friday fish fries at many metro Detroit churches and fraternal organizations are underway.
Despite the pandemic, those organizations are gearing up to provide traditional Friday fish fries, though in a different way.
During a normal, non-pandemic year, the fish fry at the Knights of Columbus in Clawson would draw hundreds of people every Friday.
This year, Ed Sanocki, one of the organizers of the Clawson fish fry, said they will do a take-out only.
"We weren't ready to open for dine-in seating," Sanocki said.
A check of several area churches that typically host Friday fish fries are following in the same footsteps and offering carryout only.
"Last year was a complete shutdown for us (because of the pandemic)," Sanocki said. "Our organization has always done come in and sit down, all-you-can-eat."

The Clawson Knights of Columbus will take pre-orders by phone and through email for pick up. Everything will be in the parking lot for curbside. The prepackaged fish dinners are $10 for three pieces of fried pollock, macaroni and cheese, baked potato and a vegetable. The Clawson Knights of Columbus famous homemade brownie is also added.
"We will have some drive-up reservations since we don't know," Sanocki said. "We may run out of food and that would be a great thing for us to happen on our first try — not for the people waiting in line but for the fact there was enough interest to get pre-order and drive-up dinners to everyone we could."
There are about 1.3 million Catholics in southeast Michigan, according to the Archdiocese of Detroit. Last year. the Archdiocese introduced a handy searchable database for area fish fries. The Archdiocese's fishfryfinder.org lists metro Detroit fish fries along with menus, prices and links to parishes.
“We are hearing positive feedback that people from all over southeast Michigan are using the updated fishfryfinder.org to help them find various locations for pick up and dine-in meals during the Lenten season. The parishes use fish fries as an annual revenue source and a way to engage with their communities, especially during these challenging times," the Archdiocese of Detroit said in an email to the Free Press.
