Fish For Life Corpus Christi delivered free meat Saturday to local families in need in the T.G. Allen Elementary School community.

The organization, with the help of 17 volunteers, partnered with four local ranches to deliver over 700 pounds of wild game meat Saturday to 70 families.

"I love the feeling of being a part of something like this," Fish For Life volunteer Ashleigh Thomas said. "I know that it's doing good and it's something that we need to do as a community to build each other up and to help each other."

With meat donations from Dancing Elk Ranch, Four Amigos Ranch, La Manada Hunting Club and Lonesome Coyote Ranch, Fish For Life will be able to meet their goal of serving 200 impoverished families.

"We have identified, through communities and schools, students who have a legitimate need for weekend food," Fish For Life vice president Will Deaton said. "A lot of people don't realize some of these students don't have meals on the weekend."

The donated wild game is a mix of nilgai, deer and elk that has been processed into venison steak and burger.

According to Deaton, it cost nearly $10,000 to process all the 80 donated animals and get them ready for distribution.

This project is made possible by Friends of Fish For Life who contributed to the costs of processing the donated animals.

"We had donations coming in from everywhere," Deaton said. "Once people heard what we were doing we received $11,000 in donations. I was pretty cool."

Saturday's delivery was the second delivery of meat made by Fish For Life in the past month. The organization has hopes of delivering nearly 3,000 pounds of meat to those in the community.

After being delayed by the recent freeze, Fish For Life knew providing families with food now was more crucial than ever.

"This whole thing just kind of came together. We did not plan for (distributing after the freeze), but (the donations) just happen to come at the right time," Thomas said. "Just doing this out of the kindness of our hearts has been amazing."

Deaton said Fish For Life hopes to make wild game donations annually as long as it has the funds to make it happen.
