Marlins win final spring game, clinch best record in Grapefruit League - Fish Stripes

JUPITER, Fla.—We came full circle this afternoon with Daniel Castano taking the mound for the Miami Marlins’ final game this spring against the New York Mets. In his 4²⁄₃ innings of work on Sunday, Castano allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out five batters and walked none. The lone run came from a solo home run off the bat of left fielder Brandon Nimmo.

The Marlins took advantage of a few misplays by the Mets defense early on, plating 4 runs in the first inning.

• Starling Marté’s groundball in the first inning didn’t induce an “E” on the scoreboard, but it was a play that should have been made by the Mets’ middle infielders. As a result, he hustled his way into second base for a lucky double.
• The Marlins added two more hits with a Jesús Aguilar double and a Garrett Cooper single. The runners all moved up when Cooper’s single got by Albert Almora Jr. in center field.
• Then Brian Anderson walked for the first time all spring, Adam Duvall singled, then they both advanced on a wild pitch!
• A strikeout gave the defense a momentary breather until Jorge Alfaro hit a groundball to the new Mets shortstop, Francisco Lindor. Lindor fielded the ground ball without a sense of urgency, allowing Alfaro beat out the infield hit.

Aguilar blasted a home run in the 3rd inning and Duvall had his own in the 5th inning. By the 7th inning, the score was 7-1 but the Marlins weren’t done. The Fish collected back-to-back hits by Joe Dunand and Brian Miller, but Edwin Díaz fanned back-to-back hitters on fastballs. Eddy Alvarez came to the plate with two on and two out and wasted no time, driving the second pitch he saw into the right-centerfield gap for a triple. The former Olympic speed skater would score on a Nick Fortes single.

Down by 9 runs in the 9th inning, the Mets could only tack on a solo shot. The Marlins won the final exhibition game by a score of 10-2.

It may not have been the most surprising news of the day, but Marlins GM Kim Ng joined the radio crew in the 7th inning where she announced that Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be the Marlins’ starting second baseman for 2021’s Opening Day.

Chisholm Jr. started off slow but kicked it into gear by mid-March. In his final 11 spring training games, he recorded 9 hits in 23 at-bats. Chisholm Jr. won the job over Isan Díaz, who went just 2-for-34 in spring training. Ng noted that the team looks forward to seeing Díaz with the big league club this season, but Chisholm Jr. gets the nod on April 1.

Before traveling south to Miami, Marlins players will hold a workout Monday morning at 10 a.m. on the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium backfields.
