Port Washington's harbor will once again be quiet this summer.

Port Washington Fish Day has been canceled for the second straight year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"After careful consideration of the current pandemic situation and related issues, and considering what is in the best interests of our visitors, volunteers, and community, Port Washington Fish Day will not be taking place in 2021," the organization posted on its Facebook account Feb. 27

The festival, which includes a parade, live music, a car show, fireworks and yes, lots of fish, is typically held the third Saturday in July.

While the vaccine rollout is well underway in Wisconsin, medical experts don't expect there to be herd immunity until at least late summer, something needed for health restrictions to ease and mass gatherings like festivals and concerts to likely return.

“While we hoped the festival could take place this July, we don’t see a path forward to producing the event we all know and love," said Fish Day President Toni Brown.

The post thanked its supporters and said it is looking forward to next year's event.

"Don't worry, the 'World's Largest One Day Fish Fry' will be back and better than ever for July 16, 2022," it said.

Port Washington Fish Day is the latest summer festival to cancel in 2021. Ethnic festivals Festa Italiana and Germanfest at Maier Festival Park, on the Summerfest grounds, have already been canceled.

Pride Fest canceled its June date but hopes to have its festival later in the year. Summerfest has been postponed from late June and early July until September.
