Popular state fish hatchery’s open house to go virtual this week - pennlive.com

The annual open house at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Linesville State Fish Hatchery will be virtual this year in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which means many more people will be able to take the tour.

A virtual event Thursday through Saturday, April 15-17, will replace the annual in-person open house, which annually attracts thousands of visitors to the hatchery in the northwestern corner of the state.

It will be hosted on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Facebook page, and will feature agency experts with informational sessions that would normally be presented in-person at the open house.

All virtual sessions will be streamed live and provide an opportunity for viewers to offer relevant questions and comments through the commission’s Facebook page that can be incorporated into the presentations in real time. All comments submitted must follow the commission’s social media policy.

Originally constructed in 1939, the Linesville hatchery is situated on 2,500 acres at the Pymatuning Reservoir. It consists of earthen ponds, exterior concrete raceways, a hatchery building that contains interior stainless steel and concrete raceways, and jar and vertical flow through tray egg incubators.

Here’s the planned schedule for the virtual open house:

Thursday, April 15

10 a.m. – All About the Linesville State Fish Hatchery, featuring Jared Sayers, hatchery manager.

2 p.m. – Virtual Tour of the Linesville State Fish Hatchery, featuring Chad Foster, western regional education and outreach coordinator.

Friday, April 16

10 a.m. – How to Make Fish Prints, featuring Cody Whipple, northcentral region education specialist.

2 p.m. – The Pymatuning Fishery, featuring Tim Wilson, Area 2 fisheries biologist.

Saturday, April 17

10 a.m. – Trap Netting for Brood Stock Walleye, featuring Jared Sayers, hatchery manager.

2 p.m. – The Walleye Spawn at the Linesville State Fish Hatchery, featuring Jared Sayers, hatchery manager.

In response to the pandemic, all state fish hatcheries are closed to the public for tours.
