Two men from Huron County were recently arraigned for illegal possession of more than 85 bags of perch, walleye and panfish.

In March, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Josh Wright received a tip from the DNR’s Report All Poaching Hotline that Stanley Garbacz Jr., 68, was potentially in possession of a few hundred perch.

On the way to Garbacz's residence, Wright requested assistance from Huron County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joshua Loss. When Loss arrived, he confirmed there were a lot of fish being filleted.

After receiving permission to count the perch being filleted by Garbacz and 53-year-old Bruce Warren, Wright counted 170 fish. Each man had 60 fish more than the daily catch limit of 25.

When Wright investigated Garbacz's home, he found more than 85 bags of walleye, perch and panfish, frozen and packed away in four freezers.

In total, Garbacz was over daily limits by 35 walleye 245 panfish and 393 additional perch.

Garbacz faces two charges of over limit possessions, one for perch and one for walleye. He must pay $7,930 in restitution.

Warren faces one charge for taking more than the daily limit of perch, and must pay $600.

Each man will face additional costs and could have their fishing privileges revoked when they are sentenced during a future court appearance.

“Fish rules and regulations are in place to maintain a healthy natural resource,” said Lt. Dave Shaw, Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Division.

“Taking over limits by one or more individuals can impact the harvestable population and which could potentially reduce fish species for future generations," Shaw said.

Suspected poaching violations may be reported 24-hours-a day, seven days a week to the DNR's Report All Poaching hotline at 800-292-7800. Tips may be submitted anonymously and rewards may be offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects.
