Moline solidified its position as a state power in the Illinois High School Association bass fishing by winning their second state title Saturday.
“It’s a pretty fun lake, if you can find the fish,” Maroon Bennett Glassner said.
The Maroons, who won their first title in 2014, found fish and weighed the biggest bag of the tournament of 13 pounds, 1 ounce on Day 2 at Carlyle Lake to jump from fourth past Day 1 leader Christopher (second, 19-0).
Antioch jumped from seventh on Day 1 to take third and the final trophy with their second limit of five largemouth bass on Day 2 of 9-12 to total 16-9. It was the third straight top-10 finish for Antioch at state.
“It was a grind, but they caught a few fish throughout the day,” Antioch coach Brad Rubin said.
“We kept grinding and giving it everything we had,” junior Tucker Siminak said. “We ran the whole day.
He said they caught their first keeper half hour into the tournament and the last with five minutes to go.
Senior Kyle Anderson was making his third trip to state.
Szymon Piton and Cris Slechta caught a big second limit Saturday to jump Sandburg from 11th after Day 1 to its highest finish with a seventh (13-3).
“We had a good morning, then it slowed down big time in the afternoon,” Slechta said. “We were using lipless crankbaits and buzzbaits all day.”
Eddie and Blake Gad caught a big bag of 9-2 to lift Reed-Custer to eighth (13-2). Minooka, third after Day 1, took 10th with 11-15.
NOTES
Gunner Kibort caught the big bass of the tournament (6-3) on Day 2 to lift Bradley-Bourbonnais to 12th (9-13). It was their first fish of the day. . . Dylan McMurray’s big bass on Saturday of 3-14 lifted Hinsdale South to 22nd (7-5). Assistant coach/boat driver Nichole Mara said it was the first bass he caught on a crankbait. . . . One of the scenes at state was two big camouflaged SeaArks. . . . Biologist Fred Cronin said he saw his first bass fry last week, so he suspected the bass were in the middle of the spawn. The lake was clear and levels relatively stable. He noted the crappie have been big after a strong year class in 2015 and there have been fairly good spawns since.
