For Matt Clifton, frying fish has always been a hobby. When his two granddaughters, juniors at Unioto High School, decided they wanted summer jobs, the grandfather decided to make it into a business.
"I've fried fish for over 20 something years at different events- not at a sale level but for different events, friends and family and people who have asked me to do it," said Clifton.
When Clifton's two twin granddaughters, Haley and Harley, decided to search for summer jobs, Clifton didn't feel comfortable putting them out in the workforce due to the pandemic, so instead, he offered to set up a food truck where they could work weekends.
"I didn't feel comfortable putting them out there- COVID, dealing with different kinds of people when they're 16 years old, so I said, let's do this, and they said, 'Let's do it pap,'" said Clifton. "I did it all for them, to be able to have a job, make some money and get some responsibility."
The two girls need to have cars for school, said Harley, as each spend half a day on campus and the other half at a different location - for Haley, taking pre-college nursing courses at OUC, and for Harley, taking classes at Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center.
"I like it so far," said Haley. "I like talking to customers and taking orders, and (Harley) would rather stay back in the food truck and make the food."
The two twins plan to use the money to buy cars, and put the rest in savings. One of the twins, Haley, has accepted a two-year scholarship to the nursing program at OUC post high school. The other, Harley, said she doesn't know where she plans to go to school yet, but does plan to go to college.
The food truck, located 1786 North Bridge Bridge Street, is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to serve fried perch in four piece and two-piece meals along with fish sandwiches, hot dogs and coney dogs, and sides including baked beans, macaroni salad, potato salad and chips.
The food stand will stay open through August, said Matt Clifton. "I'll let them enjoy the Ross County Fair and then we'll shut down," he said. "We'll try to open again next summer."
Outside of work, the pair of twins bond with their grandfather whenever they can, said Harley. "We like to go fishing a lot."
Clifton's Catch is open on Weekends through the Ross County Fair on Friday 4-7, Saturday 11-7, and Sunday 11-5.
