WORCESTER — Continuing through Aug. 1, the Indian Lake Watershed Association is hosting an event showcasing local anglers and their catches. The program aims to illustrate opportunities offered at city lakes and ponds.

"Fish Tales: Stories of Fishing in the Heart of the Commonwealth" is asking fishing enthusiasts to upload photos and stories of their catches in Worcester's ponds and lakes.

The entries will be displayed in a public setting by mid-August and prizes will be awarded to winners in various categories.

This program is part of the 2021 Blue Spaces Angler Event Series, a collaborative effort by the City of Worcester Lakes and Ponds Program, Indian Lake Watershed Association, Lake Quinsigamond Watershed Association, and the Tatnuck Brook Watershed Association as a way to engage the community.

"We're trying to get people from all walks of life, individuals and families, involved in caring for our water bodies," said Beth Proko, president of the Indian Lake Watershed Association. "Part of the goal is education, and we're connecting with the angler community, who bring a lot of knowledge to the table."

Organizers also see these events as a way to raise awareness about water quality and conservation issues.

"When you have people engaging with these waterbodies, using them for recreation, they’re more likely to want to protect these resources. We want to build that recognition, that excitement and pride," said Jacquelyn Burmeister, senior environmental analyst for the Department of Public Works & Parks.

Some of the events directly address these issues, such as "Tangled in the Weeds" on June 17, which will explain the importance of native aquatic plants to maintaining healthy fish communities.

Some of the proposed competitive categories for "Fish Tales" are "Angler-catch lookalike," "Sounds like a tall tale," "Best family fishing photo."

To participate, people should visit wooanglerseries.com to find the event and upload their entry using a google form.
